A forum post is not a Google result and it is not a newspaper article. It is a row in a database that some volunteer, or some thin company, may or may not still moderate. Australians who write to Reddit, Whirlpool or an old phpBB board as if Europe’s right to be forgotten applied here will wait forever. It does not apply here. The Australian law hub is blunt about that. This piece is the practical sequel.

If you remember one distinction from this guide, make it this one: moderator removal versus legal removal versus archive leftover. Do the first wherever the post breaks a rule the site actually enforces. Do the second only when you have a statute or an order. Do the third so that a deleted thread does not keep ranking from a scrape. Confuse the three and you will spend a month sending the wrong letter to the wrong address.

Australia does not have a right to be forgotten

The European delisting regime is a search product. It tells certain Google domains to stop showing a URL for a name query in defined circumstances. It is not a delete key for Reddit, for Whirlpool, or for a 2009 phpBB board whose owner is now a retired sysadmin in another state.

Australian removal work sits on a smaller shelf: the site’s terms; defamation after the 2021 reforms; the Online Safety Act, for the abuse eSafety can actually reach; copyright, if you own the work; and, rarely, a privacy complaint against an APP entity. A post that is merely old, merely embarrassing, or merely true is not on that shelf. Agencies that advertise “RTBF for Australians” are selling a European form to people who cannot use it.

What Reddit will actually consider

Reddit is a US company with Australian users and a layered moderation system. A subreddit’s volunteers can remove a post that Google and the courts will leave alone. The company can remove a post the volunteers refused. A court can order a URL down when both have said no. Those are three different inboxes.

Doxxing and personal information. Reddit’s policy on sharing private information is the live door for home addresses, identity documents, phone numbers, and the “here is their workplace” post. It is also the door that closes if the information is already on the target’s own public profile. Report the post and any comment that repeats the data. Moderators can remove faster than admin; admin can remove when the moderators are the problem.

Harassment. Reddit distinguishes a rude thread from a campaign. A single r/australia comment that is merely unpleasant will stay. A coordinated pile-on, a brigade from another subreddit, or a post that invites private messages to a named nurse or teacher is a stronger report. Use the in-app flow from the targeted account. Volunteer moderators do not owe you a correspondence.

Impersonation, stolen photographs, and image-based abuse. An account passing as you, or a post built from your private photos, is a policy job. It is not automatically a copyright job, though copyright is sometimes a second door if you own the image. For intimate images, use Reddit’s report, use eSafety where the Act applies, and do not circulate the file.

What Reddit will not do: unpublish a true recount of a tenancy dispute because you have moved on; delete a take about a public company because the share price suffered; or promise that a removed post has vanished from scrapes, caches or the Wayback Machine.

Whirlpool, Hotcopper and the long tail of phpBB

The Australian forum problem is older than Reddit. Whirlpool still holds a decade of broadband, tenancy and consumer threads. Hotcopper still holds a decade of retail-investor gossip. A long tail of phpBB, vBulletin and XenForo boards still holds suburb politics, school-parent fights, and the occasional medical rumour. These sites are not Meta. There is often one administrator and a contact form that goes to a Gmail address.

Write to the administrator as a reader of the rules, not as a plaintiff. Quote the forum’s own prohibition on personal information or doxxing if it has one. Give the exact URL, the date, and the one-sentence hook. Offer a redacted proof of identity if you are asking them to take your address off a 2014 thread. Do not send a six-page chronology.

Whirlpool will sometimes edit a post to strip a phone number or a street address when the request is precise. It will not unpublish a consumer complaint that names a trading business and is merely unwelcome. Hotcopper is more legalistic and more stubborn on anything that looks like a short-seller fight; a listed company’s IR team already knows this. An old phpBB board may have no functioning contact at all. In that case you are in host-and-registrar territory, or in archive removals, or you are finished.

Volunteer moderators burn out. A polite, short, documented request is the only kind that gets a reply on a Saturday. A threat to sue, in the first email, is the kind that gets filed under “ignore”.

Moderator, company, lawyer, eSafety

Match the inbox to the lever.

Moderator or administrator. Best for doxxing, off-topic pile-ons, stolen photographs, and the phone number someone pasted in 2017. Fast when the forum is alive. Useless when the board is abandoned.

Company trust-and-safety, where it exists. Reddit admin, not the volunteers, for policy the volunteers will not touch. Almost no Australian phpBB board has this layer.

eSafety. Adult cyber-abuse and image-based abuse, not a general forum regulator. A removal notice can reach a service that is ignoring you. It will not reach a dead board with no functioning organisation behind it, and it will not take down a rude but lawful product complaint. Read what eSafety can actually order before you paste a Whirlpool URL into the form.

Solicitor, concerns notice, proceedings. This is the defamation door, and it is slower, narrower and more expensive than people who have read a headline about “serious harm” expect. A concerns notice is not a spell. It has to identify the imputation and the serious harm. Sending one you cannot stand behind can become its own problem. It is also the door for a court order that you later take to Google.

Do not dress a reputation problem up as a copyright claim because a forum form offered that checkbox. That mistake has its own piece.

Archives, leftovers, and when the post stays

A moderator deletion is a source takedown. It is not a search takedown and it is not an archive takedown.

Google will keep a card until the URL 404s or 410s and the index notices, or until a personal-information or legal removal succeeds. That process is in the Google Search guide. The Wayback Machine will keep a copy until Archive.org accepts a request from the site owner, or, in a narrow set of personal-data and non-consensual-image cases, from someone else. That process is in Wayback Machine removals. Forum scrapes, old search caches and “removeddit”-style mirrors are a third leftover. Some will honour a host-level robots change. Many will not.

This is why “the thread is gone” is not the end of the job. Check a logged-out Google query for the exact headline and for your name. Check the Wayback URL. Check whether the same text has been pasted onto a second board. Forums are persistent by design; that was the point of them.

The post stays up when it is a true consumer complaint, a political argument, a retail-investor opinion, or an old thread that names you only because you named yourself. It stays up when the administrator has disappeared. In those cases the honest work is narrower: strip any live personal information the administrator will still edit; de-index what Google will actually de-index; leave the rest. Agencies that promise to “clear Reddit” are, at best, filing the same moderator reports you can file.

A working sequence we recommend

  1. Capture the live URL, a screenshot with date, and a logged-out Google result for the same thread.
  2. Write the one-sentence hook that names a rule or a statute, not a preference.
  3. Report in-app on Reddit, or write a short rules-based email to the administrator of a smaller board.
  4. If the material is doxxing, an intimate image, or a child is in the footage, file with eSafety the same week. Do not wait on a volunteer.
  5. If the post is allegedly false and causing serious harm, read the defamation guide before you send a concerns notice.
  6. Once the source is down or refused, deal with Google and with archives.
  7. Diary a reminder in 90 days. Scrapes come back.

If you want the desk to look at a general question about the process, use contact. Do not send the thread dump, the court file, or a list of usernames to “investigate”. We publish method. We do not run your case.
